Ford Falcon Wagons XD
- XF (1979 - 1987)
Australia
No.1 "Backpacker Car" is the ever poular Ford Falcon Wagon, driven by
just about every traveller wanting strength, comfort, reliability and
plenty of power to get you to large distances quickly. A trip down to
Kings-X or Bondi Beach and you will see these beasts lining the streets
in droves, just waiting for their owners to turn the key and point them
towards the outback were these cars are at their happiest, foot to the
floor, fully-laiden. They can handle anything you care to throw at them
and more. Add to this the fact that they are cheap to buy and parts are
readily available and there's no way you'll go wrong in an old Ford!!!
They can also also double as your accommodation by simply folding the
rear seat down, which makes ample room for 2 people to sleep comfortably
and with the option of a tent, you can sleep a car full of bodies- no
worries. They come in either a 5 seater (front bucket seats, rear bench),
automatic or manual with a 4.1 litre (250cu) engine, which on the open
road is extremely economical to run.
Ford Falcon Wagons EA - EB (1988 -1993) These later model Ford Falcons are now becoming quite popular with Budget Travellers as they are slightly newer , more fuel efficient and generally look more modern . They are equally as reliable as the earlier X series Ford Falcons and with quite a few changes and improvements having been carried out, such as the Automatic Transmissions are now 4 speeds compared with the earlier 3 speed Autos -which allows them to achieve BETTER FUEL ECONOMY OF 10 LITRES PER 100 KLM: 60 LITRE TANK = 600KLM's . The engine size on the EA is 3.9 litre and the EB has a 4.0 litre engine with most being fuel injected. The manual EA & EB Fords are all standard 5 SPEED and in this configuration are a great car to drive and very economical . Load space / Sleeping area are very much the same - HUGE and they come in either a 5 seater or a 6 seater with a bench seat arrangement . It is possible to purchase one for between $3,000 - $3,999, which represents great value for money for a car that's a little over 10 years young !!
